The quick brief

When angles agree

When two parallel lines are crossed by a transversal, alternate interior angles have equal measure. First find the angles between the lines, then check that they lie on opposite sides of the transversal.

Key ideas to know

Parallel lines

Coplanar lines that never intersect; matching arrow marks identify them in a diagram.

Transversal

A line that crosses two or more other lines.

Alternate interior angles

A pair of angles between two lines and on opposite sides of the transversal.

Rules + formulas
  • If parallel lines are crossed by a transversal, alternate interior angles are congruent.
  • Congruent angles have equal measure.
  • Check both clues: the angles are inside the two lines and on opposite sides of the transversal.
Spot the problem type
  • Look for the pair of matching arrow marks that establish the lines are parallel.
  • The target angles sit between those lines, on opposite sides of the transversal.
Use this approach
  1. Identify the parallel lines and the transversal that crosses them.
  2. Check that both angles are inside the parallel lines and on opposite sides of the transversal.
  3. Use the alternate interior angles theorem to conclude their measures are equal.
